WINE OF THE WEEK 11 14 06

Wine of the Week

By Brenda Maitland

2005 Red Guitar Old Vine Tempranillo- Garnacha
Navarre, Spain
$10-$12
Last week a "singing" Gruner Veltliner was featured in this space. In this issue, a tuneful Red Guitar from Navarre in northeastern Spain takes center stage. A blend of Tempranillo and Garnacha (Grenache) grapes both come from 60 to 110-year-old vines tended by four generations of growers. In the glass, earthy, leathery, black fruit aromas emanate, followed by ripe black cherry, currant and blackberry on the palate. It's a big, full-bodied wine that will improve with multiple rounds of splash decanting. Drink now and over the next couple of years. Good with hardy fare like gumbo, red beans and sausages, pizza and pasta. Where to buy it: Whole Food Markets Uptown and Metairie and Cost Plus World Markets in Elmwood, Harvey and Covington. Where to drink it: Schiro's Deli and Bar. (Listings current at press time.)
