Wine of the Week

By Brenda Maitland

G.H. Mumm Cordon Rouge Non-Vintage Brut Champagne
Reims, France
$27-$37
Mumm's Cordon Rouge, with its distinctive red-sashed label, has graced significant scenes in films from Casablanca to Moonstruck as well as memorable moments in many lives during its storied 180-year history. Over the past several years, the prestigous Champagne house has reinvigorated the brand with an increased percentage of grand cru grapes in the non-vintage blend. Composed of 45 percent Pinot Noir, 30 percent Chardonnay and 35 percent Pinot Meunier, the classic cuvee is renowned for its richness, finesse and steady stream of tiny, bristling, bursting bubbles. The bouquet showcases citrus and apple aromas augmented by white peach, apricot and grapefruit. In the mouth, the well-structured wine presents fresh, complex fruit, hints of caramel, a beautifully balanced acidity and a lingering finish. Delightful as an aperitif and a superb complement to various canapŽs, smoked salmon, chilled lobster and oysters. Where to buy it: Most Sav-A-Centers, Winn-Dixies, RouseÕs, MatassaÕs Market, all Breaux Marts, Martin Wine Cellar in Metairie, DorignacÕs and AcquistapaceÕs Covington Supermarket. Where to drink it: The Rib Room in the Royal Orleans Hotel and ArnaudÕs. (Listings current at press time.)
