Steve Teeters: Resurrection
When we think of the world's great art meccas, Lubbock, Texas, may not be the first place that comes to mind. More famous as the gateway to the Texas panhandle and the birthplace of Buddy Holly, Lubbock is also home to found-object sculptor and prairie Surrealist, Steve Teeters, whose studio on Buddy Holly Avenue has been called a mecca for those interested in an artistic alternative to the ordinary. A connoisseur of curious and derelict objects, Teeters works intuitively until the whole emerges from the parts. According to gallery director Christy Wood, "each piece is perceived but not planned; he prefers to let the materials and the spontaneity 'of the soul' dictate the direction each piece will take." As Teeters himself puts it: "There's no use in anything being ugly." -- D. Eric Bookhardt
