Hurricane Katrina is sometimes considered the "great surrealist" for its frenzied rearranging of so much of the city's landscape. Artist Dawn Dedeaux was in the thick of it, as Katrina ravaged her Mid-City home and studio, as well as her works in progress, now recreated along with new post-K efforts. Confronted with chaos, she decided the "sacred mounds of debris" found across the city demanded new interpretations, and her work examines the patterns found in trees, flood marks, hurricanes and mold. "Even in the paradoxical cruelty of nature's wrath, it offers a sublime organic beauty," she says, expressing her belief that to observe such beauty is to satisfy hope, to understand that light emerges from darkness, and that from it can emerge a whole new decor. -- D.
