WINE OF THE WEEK 03 20 07

Wine of the Week

By Brenda Maitland

2004 Nugan Estate Shiraz
Southeastern Australia
$10-$13
From the land down under, Nugan Shiraz illustrates the appeal and accessibility of fruit-forward Aussie-made Shiraz. Estate-grown grapes were sourced for this wine with 80 percent aged in new American oak and 20 percent in 1, 2 and 3-year-old French and American oak casks. Look for red berry aromas and floral yet earthy notes followed by dark plum, juicy berry flavors, spice and black pepper. The medium-bodied wine is finely textured with even tannins and good balance. Drink now and over the next three to four years. A fine accompaniment to grilled or roast lamb, eggplant dishes and tomato-basil soup. Where to buy it: Elio's Wine Warehouse, Dorignac's and Hugh's Wine Cellar in Mandeville. Where to drink it: Jacques-Imo's, Rock 'N' Sake, The Gumbo Shop, Louisiana Bistro and Theo's Pizza. (Listings current at press time.)
