WINE OF THE WEEK 04 10 07

Wine of the Week

By Brenda Maitland

2005 Kim Crawford Pinot Noir Marlborough, New Zealand $14-$18 Retail
Marlborough wines, from New Zealand's most widely known region, have earned their place on the map of the world's most well drunk labels in a relatively short time. Although primarily known for Sauvignon Blancs, other varietals, especially Pinot Noir, thrive in the temperate maritime climate and free-draining alluvial soils. This wine, from the fine Kim Crawford label, is both tank and barrel-aged for nearly six months. Bright cherry aromas with plumy undertones and vanilla notes are followed on the palate by dark berry flavors and ripe fruit with fine, even tannins throughout. Drink now and over the next five years. Good with patŽ, pasta, fish, chicken, pork and lamb. Where to buy it: Elio's Wine Warehouse, Breaux Mart on Severn, Martin Wine Cellar in Metairie and Dorignac's. Where to drink it: Mandina's Restaurant and Bar, Bombay Club, Redfish Grill, Table One and Broussard's. (Listings current at press time.)
