WINE OF THE WEEK 07 03 07

Wine of the Week

By Brenda Maitland

2005 Wyndham Estate Bin 333 Pinot Noir
Southeastern Australia
$7-$10 Retail
George Wyndham, who established the estate nearly 180 years ago in southeastern Australia, pioneered viticulture and winemaking in the Hunter Valley region. This pleasant wine, aged nine months in 2- and 3-year-old French oak, offers a subtle red fruit bouquet with just a hint of aromatic spices. On the palate, more nuances of strawberry, raspberry and sweet red cherry prevail. Although lacking complexity, this bargain-priced, light-bodied wine is good for summer quaffing and may appeal to traditional white wine drinkers with its extremely soft tannins and simple flavors. Drink now. Good with seafood, light meats and soft cheeses. Where to buy it: Most Sav-A-Centers, Dorignac's, Breaux Mart on Jefferson Highway., Robert's Fresh Market on West Esplanade and Acquistapace's Covington Supermarket. Where to drink it: The Steak Knife, Chartres House Café, La Bayou and Big Easy of Bourbon. (Listings current at press time.)
