Wine of the Week

By Brenda Maitland

2006 Domaine de Fontsainte Gris de Gris Ros
Corbieres, France
$13-$15 Retail
Languedoc-Roussillon, France's most southwestern wine region, is home to a quarter of the grape production in the country. While 60 percent of the wine made in the region is labeled "vin de pays d'oc" — usually simple, inexpensive wines without a more definitive terroir — Languedoc has five highly regarded appellations including Corbieres, which can produce quite remarkable as well as reasonably priced wine. A blend of Carignan, Grenache, Mouvedre and Syrah, this delightfully crisp, well-balanced rosé features enticing aromas of strawberries, rhubarb, some mineralilty with more red berry fruit on the palate, a refreshing acidity, great structure and a long finish. It's a perfect summer sipper and is to be enjoyed now. It goes equally well with grilled fish, barbeque, roast fowl and aioli. Where to buy it: The Savvy Gourmet, Bacchanal and Martin Wine Cellar Uptown, Metairie and Mandeville. Where to drink it: Martinique and Iris. (Listings current at press time.)
