Wine of the Week

By Brenda Maitland

2004 Colomé Red Wine
Salta, Argentina
$25-$27 Retail
Argentina is among the worldÕs top five producers of wine. It also is blessed with perhaps the highest altitude pre-phylloxera vines in the world. In Salta, ArgentinaÕs northernmost region, the grapes for this wine were harvested partially from 150-year-old estate-grown vines. A blend of 66 percent Malbec, 30 percent Cabernet Sauvignon and 14 percent Tannat, the wine was aged in 30 percent new and 70 percent one-year-old French oak barrels. An inky, intense wine with a powerful tannin structure, it has aromas of clove, black fruit and pepper. On the palate, expect velvety blackberries and black cherry flavors with vanilla and toasty notes. Enjoy it with grilled meats, ribs, red beans and sausage, hearty red sauce dishes and strong cheeses. Where to buy it: ElioÕs Wine Warehouse and DorignacÕs. Where to drink it: FelipeÕs Taqueria. (Listings current at press time.)
