Deutsches Haus Oktoberfest
Look for bratwurst, knackwurst and sauerkraut. Look for a selection of 18 German beers flowing from 41 taps. Look for an oompah band on the outdoor stage, but most of all, look for the giant dancing chicken proudly duded up in lederhosen. It's Oktoberfest time once again at Deutsches Haus, time for the city's nonprofit German cultural organization to invite thousands of people to its newly restored Mid-City clubhouse and beer garden to join its monthlong, family-friendly celebration and fundraiser. For many locals, doing the 'chicken dance" to the sounds of Bavarian brass is practically a rite of autumn, and this year Deutsches Haus will introduce an elaborately costumed chicken mascot to further enliven the outdoor dance floor. Deutsches Haus leaders say they are concerned about plans recently announced for a new medical complex slated for the area that has been home to the club since 1928, but for the next few weeks at least, the focus will be on food, drink, music and, of course, happy people of all ages dancing like chickens. General admission $5, children 12-under free. " Ian McNulty
