"Throwback" featuring Fay Wray
On the Hold Steady's Almost Killed Me, singer Craig Finn cautions, 'The '80s almost killed me / Let's not recall them quite so fondly." Apparently modern indie rock missed the message. From Springsteen fetishists to post-punk poseurs, the period that birthed hip hop and 'She Bop" " not to mention alt-rock founding fathers like the Replacements and HÜsker DÜ " is more relevant now than at any point since the crest of early-'80s New Wave gave way to the low tide of late-'80s Velveeta. It seems Republic recalls this time fonder than Finn does, and in the spirit of revisionist rock history, the club created 'Throwback," a weekly rave-up featuring retro spins from DJ Damion Yancy and live sets sprinkled with nostalgic covers from local bands. Look for Fay Wray " a horn-heavy cog in the emerging post-college-rock scene that includes the City Life, Glasgow! and Antenna Inn (with whom it shares two members) " to do things with 'Thriller" and 'Video Killed the Radio Star" that haven't been done for decades. Tickets $5. — Noah Bonaparte Pais
