Wine of the Week

By Brenda Maitland

2007 Ken Forrester Petit Chenin
Stellenbosch, South Africa
$8-$11 Retail

South Africa's vastly improving wine industry, concentrated around the bustling port of Cape Town at the country's southwestern tip, owes its great success in part to outstanding producers like Ken Forrester. His Petit Chenin, made from 100 percent Chenin Blanc, provides an excellent example of varietal expression that is at the forefront of the grape's revival. In the glass, the wine shows floral notes and a mélange of green apple, lime and melon aromas. On the palate, anticipate super-vibrant, clean, balanced tastes with flavors of honeysuckle, fresh melon, citrus, stone fruits and bright acid. It's high quality at a bargain price. Drink it now with oysters, mussels, calamari and fish. Where to buy it: W.I.N.O., Cork & Bottle, The Wine Seller and Acquistapace's Covington Supermarket. Where to drink it: The Bridge Lounge and Slice. (Listings current at press time.)
