Wine of the Week

By Brenda Maitland

2006 El Chaparral de Vega Sindoa Old Vines Grenache
Navarra, Spain
$10-$12 Retail

Produced from low-yield, 60-plus-year-old vineyards in Spain's northeastern corner, this tasty bottle is an excellent value. Aged in both French and American oak casks, the easy-drinking, food-friendly wine exudes intense varietal expression that channels the character of southern Rhone offerings. Alluring aromas of ripe berry fruit, black pepper and spice with some herbal, briary, earthy notes lead into concentrated flavors of juicy black cherry, raspberry, some chocolate and more appealing pepper on the palate. The smooth-textured wine has lively acidity and well-integrated tannins. It's best decanted. Drink now and over the next four to five years. Match it with tapas, hearty meat dishes and aged Manchego cheese, nuts and olives. Where to buy it: Swirl and all Martin Wine Cellars. Where to drink it: Byblos Uptown.
