Wine of the Week

By Brenda Maitland

2005 Capezzana Barco Reale di Carmignano
Tuscany, Italy
$17-$19 Retail
Long before Super Tuscan wines gained cult status, the tiny village of Carmignano just west of Florence was producing the first Super Tuscans, often a blend of Sangiovese — Tuscany's premier red grape — and Cabernet Sauvignon that had been grafted from Chateau Lafite vines. This wine, a blend of 70 percent Sangiovese, 20 percent Cabernet and 10 percent Canaiolo, was aged 10 months in French oak followed by three months bottle aging. In the glass, intense aromas of dark red berries, earth tones and a bit of spice lead into a beautifully textured, medium-bodied wine of bright, rounded fruit flavors with oak notes, supple tannins and balanced acidity. It's a value-priced alternative to Brunello and a great food wine to enjoy with Italian dishes, game and hardy cheeses. Where to buy it: Hopper's Wine and Spirits. Where to drink it: Irene's Cuisine. (Listings current at press time.)
