Ugly Dog is a casual spot to dig into some barbecue and watch sports or play pool. There are sandwiches, burgers and generous platters of barbecue meat that come with sides such as chili beans with sour cream, onions and cheese and the sweet and spicy coleslaw. For more than a quarter century, Upperline has been home to inspired local cooking and a folk and fine art collection representing some of the city's most beloved bohemians. Proprietor JoAnn Clevenger is the impresario behind the restaurant and also the creator of the city's signature fried green tomatoes with shrimp remoulade. Another of the kitchen's signature dishes is the roast duck served with garlic-port or ginger-peach sauce. The oysters St. Claude are a rare treat that some diners even order for dessert.
