Wine of the Week

By Brenda Maitland

2006 Castello della Sala Bram“to Chardonnay$10-$13 Retail

In Umbria, the tiny region nestled next to Tuscany, Bram“to is made by one of Italy's most prominent winemaking families. Since 1385, the Antinoris have been registered with the Guild of Winemakers. Production takes place just outside of Orvieto at Castello della Sala, a 14th century castle purchased by Marchesi Antinori in 1940. Aged in French oak, the medium-bodied wine offers scents of fresh green apple, pear notes and a touch of the tropics — essences that persist on the palate, showing concentrated varietal character, toasty vanilla flavor and bright acidity. It goes well with seafood, risotto, pasta dishes with light sauces, veal piccata and mild cheeses. Where to buy it: Dorignac's and Elio's Wine Warehouse. Where to drink it: La Vita in Mid-City, Café Giovanni, Andrea's and Gio's Villa Vancheri in Mandeville. (Listings current at press time.)
