Wine of the Week

By Brenda Maitland

2006 Le Volte Tenuta dell'Ornellaia
Toscana, Italy
$17-$26 Retail

Inspired by the first earth-shaking Super Tuscan, Sassicaia, crafted on the Tuscan coast, Ornellaia was developed in 1985 in a similar style just a few miles inland. Le Volte, a softer, less tannic, lighter-styled Ornellaia, came along in 1991. Made primarily from a blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, the wine was aged 10 months in two- to four-year-old French oak. This well structured wine presents both red and dark berry fruit aromas with some spicy notes and ripe cassis, plum and blackberry flavors with a nice, balanced acidity. It's good with savory dishes, roasts, grilled meats and red sauces. Where to buy it: Elio's Wine Warehouse, Cork & Bottle, Matassa's Market, Dorignac's and Acquistapace's Covington Supermarket. Where to drink it: Maximo's Italian Grill, Bacco, Eleven 79, Ristorante Da Piero and Ristorante Del Porto. (Listings current at press time.)
