Wine of the Week

By Brenda Maitland

2005 Angove's McLaren Vale Shiraz
South Australia
$20-$22 Retail

Angove's, one of Australia's oldest family-owned wineries, has been producing wine for more than 120 years. Grapes for this wine were sourced from vineyards on the foothills of the Adelaide Range near the southern Australian coast. Aged in American oak, this medium-bodied, well-balanced wine offers excellent quality and value. In the glass, fragrant aromas of blackberry, cherry, pepper and spice lead into red currant and plum flavors with mocha undertones supported by a lively acidity and well-integrated tannin structure. Drink now but it will improve with cellaring over the next 5-7 years. It's a good accompaniment to roasted or grilled meats, fowl, game and rich cheeses. Where to buy it: Elio's Wine Warehouse, Rouses in Metairie and Dorignac's. Where to drink it: The Red Maple, Ruth's Chris Steak House in Metairie and the Bengal Lounge. (Listings current at press time.)
