Wine of the Week

By Brenda Maitland

2007 Monkey Bay Sauvignon Blanc
Marlborough, New Zealand
$10-$12 Retail
As far as wines with adorable animals virtually leaping off provocatively worded labels go, I wouldn't buy a bottle because of the marketing ploy, but I'd certainly buy one in spite of it if the wine exemplified a good quality/price ratio. This charming wine — with a monkey on the label — is produced from fruit sourced from select Marlborough vineyards, some just south of Monkey Bay. Crisp and clean with aromas of grapefruit, kiwi and lime, the wine shows concentrated flavors of citrus, tropical and stone fruit with a hint of mineralilty and herbal notes, and finishes with a refreshing, tart acidity. It's a great summer sipper and goes well with chilled seafood, soups, salads, chicken and mild cheeses. Where to buy it: Most Rouses, Whole Foods Markets, Matassa's Market, most Winn-Dixies, Breaux Mart in Uptown and Jefferson, Dorignac's, Langenstein's in Metairie and Cost Plus World Markets. Where to drink it: Schiro's Deli and Bar and Puccino's. (Listings current at press time.)
