Big Easy Entertainment Awards

April 16, 2001

The two forms that drive New Orleans’ entertainment life no doubt are music and theater. And what better way to celebrate their contribution than with an awards ceremony that not only doles out the honors but also gives the Big Easy’s top performers a stage on which to strut their stuff – in front of their peers. Visitors can sit among the stars as they enjoy performances by nominated acts, as well as the candid scenes that always erupt following the reading of "… and the winner is …." Jam sessions by such legends as Dr. John, the Neville Brothers and producer/piano master Allen Toussaint have held audiences breathless; the dynamic trio of Irma Thomas ("The Soul Queen of New Orleans"), Marva Wright and Wanda Rouzan has torn the house down, and even emcee John Goodman once heated things up with a version of Ferriday Fireball Jerry Lee Lewis’ "Great Balls o’ Fire" (with the Nevilles backing him up). When it’s all over, it’s your turn to shine, in true New Orleans fashion: the evening ends with a brass band-led "second line" that leads attendees over to a post-ceremony bash that lasts into the night.
