5th annual
Superfly during Jazzfest
concert series

Superfly Productions proudly announces the 5th annual "Superfly during Jazzfest" concert series. From April 27th through May 6th Superfly will present an eclectic mix of jazz, rock, world music and funk shows appealing to music lovers who flock to Jazzfest in New Orleans. This citywide concert series utilizes the most venerated theaters, clubs and bars around the city, to provide attendees a variety of options after a day at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Concerts will be held at the majestic Saenger, State Palace, and Orpheum Theatres, all located within walking distance of the historic French Quarter. Club shows will take place in the Warehouse District at The Howlin’ Wolf and on the Riverboat Cajun Queen, and in Uptown New Orleans at Tipitina’s, Rosy’s Jazz Hall and The Maple Leaf Bar. The Superfly during Jazzfest Concert Series will feature from 25 to 30 events including Superfly’s signature SuperJams and late-night shows that will take place from 2 in the morning until sunrise.

This series is NOT a part of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. More dates to be announced.

The series begins with a late night performance by Sound Tribe Sector 9 on Friday, April 27th at the Howlin’ Wolf. STS9 have been packing venues and festivals across the country with their unique sound. Part electronica, part ambient, part jam band, STS9’s music is intricate, energetic and lush. STS9 is sure to keep the groove conscious dancing until sunrise. Tickets are $15 and are available through Ticketweb.

Saturday, April 28th, Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe perform at the Howlin’ Wolf. KDTU have quickly evolved from best-kept secret to hottest ticket in town. Lead by saxophonist Karl Denson, a veteran of Lenny Kravitz’s band and former leader of the Greyboy Allstars, KDTU combine a love of funk and rock without sacrificing a true knowledge and love of jazz. Tickets are $20 and are available through Ticketweb.

New Orleans roots rockers The Radiators will make a special appearance on the Riverboat Cajun Queen on Saturday, April 28th. Fans of "Fish-Head" music will get a rare chance to party with The Rads on the Mississippi River. The Riverboat Cajun Queen will depart at 11:00pm and return at 2:00am. This show is sold out.

Disco Biscuits will perform a late night set at the Howlin’ Wolf on Saturday, April 28th. Their trance-fusion style and thematic performances have captured the interest and imagination of dance fans and hippies alike. The Disco Biscuits will be releasing their new album, "They Missed The Perfume" on Megaforce/Hydrophonics on April 3rd. Tickets are$15 and available through Ticketweb.

Psychedelic funksters, Deep Banana Blackout will make three appearances in the series. The first will be at Tipitina’s Uptown on Sunday, April 29th followed by a special performance on the Riverboat Cajun Queen on Thursday, May 3rd and a final late night performance at the Howlin’ Wolf on Saturday, May 5th. One of the most successful bands to hail from the Northeast, DDB’ s powerhouse live shows has gained them a loyal following. Tickets for the April 29th show at Tipitina’s are $15, tickets for the May 3rd show on the Riverboat Cajun Queen are $25. Tickets for the April 29th show are available through Ticketweb. Tickets for May 3rd and May 5th are sold out.

Garage A Trois will make two appearances in the series, the first on Sunday April 29th on the Riverboat Cajun Queen and the second on Wednesday, May 2nd at Tipitina’s Uptown. Galactic drummer Stanton Moore, eight-string guitar pioneer Charlie Hunter and avant-garde saxophonist Skerik make up Garage A Trois. This will mark the trios first appearance since their debut opening last years Oysterhead show. Electronica band, Lake Trout will open the show. These shows are sold out.

The next installment of Superfly’s highly successful SuperJam series will feature the Jacque-Imo’s Café Allstars, Wednesday, May 2nd and Thursday, May 3rd the Maple Leaf Bar. These evenings of Traditional New Orleans Jazz will include Jazz Mandolin Project’s Jamie Mansfield, Phish drummer Jon Fishman, Dirty Dozen Brass Band alumnae Gregory Davis and Kirk Joseph, Harry Connick, Jr trombonist, Lucien Barbarin and clarinetist Tim Laughlin. Tickets for both shows are sold out.

Robert Walter’s 20th Congress will make a late night appearance at the Maple Leaf Bar on Thursday, May 3rd. Jazz-funk keyboardist Robert Walter was a founding member of The Greyboy Allstars, his new outfit 20th Congress play 70’s style jazz-fusion over modern funk grooves. This show is sold out.

The String Cheese Incident will appear at the Saenger Theatre on Thursday, May 3rd and on Friday, May 4th. The String Cheese Incident mix bluegrass, world beat, jazz and rock with aplomb. The members of SCI are outstanding musicians and performers. Their appearance during last years Jazzfest Series was considered one of their finest among their dedicated fans. Special guest Femi Anikulapo Kuti will appear on May 3rd. The son of Nigerian Afro Beat innovator Fela Kuti, talented singer/saxophonist Femi, stepped from sideman to leader of his famous father’s band following his death in 1997. Femi will perform with his band Positive Force. Tickets for both shows are sold out.

Ben Harper & the Innocent Criminals will appear at the State Palace Theatre on Thursday, May 3rd. Ben Harper’s musical roots in soul, folk reggae and blues are evident both in his steel guitar playing and his songwriting. His performances and recordings with his band The Innocent Criminals have garnered both critical acclaim and a solid dedicated fan base. Ozomatli will open the show. Tickets are $30 and available through Ticketmaster.

Friday, May 4th, moe. will perform a late night show at Tipitina’s Uptown. moe. have made a name for themselves with critically acclaimed sell-out performances, complete with state-of-the-art light shows but their greatest strength proves to be their well-crafted songs, which hold up under during the bands forays into country, rock and jazz jamming. This show is sold out.

Ozomatli will perform a late night show at the Howlin’ Wolf on Friday, May 4th. Los Angeles’ Ozomatli combine Latin salsa rhythms and brass with hip-hop beats and jazz-funk grooves. Their cross-cultural sonic blend is danceable and fresh and truly unique from the many emerging artists of the Latin explosion. Tickets are $22 and available through Ticketweb.

The Joshua Redman Quartet will make a two night stand at Rosy’s Jazz Hall on Friday, May 4th and Saturday, May 5th. It’s been ten years since saxophonist Joshua Redman first appeared on the jazz scene as winner of the Thelonious Monk Institute’s saxophone competition. Since that time, he has recorded seven albums for Warner Bros. Records, including his latest disc, "Passage of Time" which will be released March 27th. According to Redman, his goal as a jazz musician "is to construct a meaningful...emotional narrative of sound". In pursuit of this goal, the Joshua Redman Quartet has revitalized the realm of acoustic jazz. The band will perform two sets each night at 9:00pm and 11:00pm. Tickets are $25 and are available through Ticketweb.

Hometown funk favorites, Galactic make a special appearance at the Saenger Theatre on Saturday, May 5th. Galactic have made their way from the clubs of the Crescent City to packing theatres and halls across the country. This will be the jazz funk ensemble’s first theatre performance in New Orleans and only night appearance during the second weekend of Jazzfest. Turntable wizard DJ Logic & Project Logic will open the show. This show is sold out.

Gov’t Mule will perform at the Orpheum Theatre on Saturday, May 5th. Former Allman Brothers members, Warren Haynes and Allen Woody formed Gov’t Mule with drummer Matt Abts in 1989. The bands bluesy psychedelic sound found favor with a large audience. The band was dealt a crushing blow in August 2000 with the death of bassist Allen Woody. The southern rockers make their triumphant return to New Orleans with Widespread Panic bassist Dave Schools and renowned keyboardist Chuck Leavell. This show is sold out.

Blue Note recording artists, Medeski, Martin & Wood will appear at the State Palace Theatre on Saturday, May 5th. Medeski, Martin & Wood formed in 1992 and have gone on to become one of the most influential modern jazz groups of their time. Their funky jazz-fusion and stellar live performances have won them legions of diehard fans. Seattle’s Critters Buggin’ will open the show. Tickets are $27.50.
