2007 Domaine "La Garrigue" Cuvee Romaine Cotes du Rhone

Rhone Valley, France / $13-$15 Retail

This quintessential Old World wine from the southern Rhône takes its name from the character and aromas of the region's wild growth of shrub brush, herbes de Provence and lavender on the limestone plateau. This unfiltered, bargain-priced wine is a combination of 65 percent Grenache, 25 percent Mourvedre and 10 percent Syrah. In the glass, earthy "garrigue" aromas, dark berry fruit and spice yield to ripe black cherry, plums, currants, tobacco, mocha notes and a mineral character. Decant it for best results and pair it with roast meats, duck, wild game, sausages, stews and barbecue. Buy it at: The Wine Seller and Cork & Bottle. Drink it at: Clever Wine Bar.
