Southern Rhône's 2007 vintage is being hailed as perhaps the best in more than 25 years, so Rhône fans will be jumping on this gem in the high-quality, good-value range. A blend of 65 percent Grenache with the rest divided between Syrah and Carignan, the wine evokes a bouquet of its earthy, garrigue origins mingled with both red and dark fruit berries, licorice, leather and white pepper notes. Ripe and robust, the wine has flavors of black cherry, boysenberry and plum with nuances of spice and Provencal herbs. Decant an hour or two before drinking for optimum results. It will improve over the next three to four years. Drink it with lamb, beef, cassoulet or red beans and rice. Buy it at: Hopper's Wines and Spirits and Bacchanal. Drink it at: Café Degas and Commander's Palace. — Brenda Maitland
