Carinena is one of Europe's oldest recognized growing districts for wine and the largest subzone of northwestern Spain's Aragon wine region. Garnacha's popularity and suitability to the terroir make it the zone's favored red varietal. The vineyards sit at altitudes between 1,300 and 2,600 feet, and extreme conditions such as drought and fierce winds are tough on less hardy varietals. Often, blends include 5 percent Carinena to extend garnacha's aging potential. Fermented in stainless steel tanks, this wine exudes fragrances of fresh red berries, spice and black pepper.
