2012 Bodegas Terra Sigillata Filon Garnacha

Calatayud, Spain

Retail $8-$10

Spain produces many noteworthy bargain wines, and Calatayud, a DO (Denominacion de Origen) classified district, is hailed as currently producing the best values for inexpensive bottlings. Calatayud is in an arid, sun-drenched area surrounded by mountain ranges, and its primary grape is garnacha tinta. Largely planted on the south-facing slopes of the Sierra de la Virgen mountain range, the vineyards feature rocky, loose soils flecked with slate and limestone. This wine is made from 100 percent garnacha grapes sourced from 30- to 40-year-old vines and fermented in stainless steel. The wine offers aromas of red and black berries and floral, spice and smoky scents. On the palate, taste raspberry, dark cherry, cassis and mineral notes. Open 15 minutes before serving to aerate. Drink it with tapas, gumbo, rotisserie chicken, lamb ragout, roasted duck, grilled sausages, tamales and manchego cheese. Buy it at: Keife and Co., Swirl Wine Bar & Market and Acquistapace's Covington Supermarket. Drink it at: Three Muses and Santa Fe. — BRENDA MAITLAND
