2012 Colome Estate Malbec

Salta, Argentina

Retail $21-$26

The Salta region in the Calchaqui Valley features the highest commercial vineyards in the world at 8,500 feet above sea level. Malbec grapes fill more than 75 acres in Colome's vinyards. In the area, Donald Hess saw a unique expression of malbec, one of the six grapes used in the finest Bordeaux blends. The thin-skinned malbeck grape has thrived in the area's thin air, bright sunshine and high altitude for more than 160 years. Malbec wines produced under these conditions are different from other Argentinian wines made with fruit from valley floors. After vinification, the wine matured in French barrels for 15 months. On the palate, taste raspberry jam, cocoa powder, spice, black pepper and a savory herbal character framed by firm, smooth tannins. Decant 30 minutes before serving. Drink it with rare steak, game and barbecue. Buy it at: Swirl Wine Bar & Market, Elio's Wine Warehouse, Breaux Mart on Jefferson Highway and Habanos & The Wine Cellar. Drink it at: Restaurant August, Tableau, Brennan's New Orleans, K-Paul's Louisiana Kitchen, Palace Cafe, Cava, Morton's The Steakhouse, Hotel Monteleone, The Court of Two Sisters, Crescent City Steaks, The Steak Knife, Lola in Covington and The Lakehouse.
