Germany's Rhineland is recognized as the birthplace and spiritual home of the riesling grape. Konstantin Frank emigrated to the area in the 1950s from Ukraine. Eventually, he opened the Vinifera Wine Cellars winery and planted pinot noir in a 9-acre vineyard on a hillside bluff overlooking Keuka Lake. His wines garnered praise, and he has been singled out as the catalyst for New York's wine industry's current success.
