Western Cape, South Africa

Retail $8-$10

This value-priced, easy-drinking wine partners perfectly with Mardi Gras street food, from burgers and pizza to tacos and sausage on a stick. Decanting the rich, deep blend into an unbreakable container — because glass bottles aren't street legal — will aerate the wine to develop the aromas and flavors. Grapes were sourced from the Swartland on the western tip of South Africa's Cape. The winery's farmstead in Franschhoek Valley — originally founded in 1771 — didn't see vineyards until the early 1990s. Matured in French oak barrels, this blend of Rhone varietals is dominated by Syrah with two thirds of the composition. Nearly a third is Mourvedre and a splash — 2 percent — is Viognier. Aromas reflect the Viognier's floral touch, while the other varietals provide spice, earth, a hint of smoke and dark berries, followed by intense flavors of black cherry, ripe plum, herbal notes, minerality and moderate tannins. Decant for 40-60 minutes. Drink now and over the next 2-3 years. Enjoy with barbecue, hot dogs, grilled meat, roast beef po-boys, osso buco, boudin, pasta and marinara sauce, and firm cheeses. Buy it at: Whole Foods Markets Uptown and in Metairie; Martin Wine Cellars Uptown, Metairie and in Mandeville; Terranova Brothers Superette; most Rouses; Cost Plus World Markets in Harvey and Elmwood; and Acquistapace's Covington Super Market. Drink it at: Capdeville. — BRENDA MAITLAND
