The Mellot family has been growing grapes and producing fine wines in the Loire region's Sancerre AOP (Appellation d'Origine Protegee) for more than 500 years. In 1698, Cesar Mellot was appointed wine advisor to King Louis XIV. Over the centuries, the Mellots aquired more vineyards and now own more than 210 planted acres, with parcels in every appellation of the Loire Valley. La Chatellenie, produced the Sauvignon blanc grapes for this wine. It has silty clay soil rich in flint, which is believed to provide the wine's hallmark steely aroma. In the glass, the wine exhibits vibrant aromas of dried orange and lemon peel, apple and fresh herbs. On the palate, taste hints of pear, lime and flinty notes with stony minerality and solid acid on its clean finish. Drink it as an aperitif or with sushi, seafood, oysters, goat cheese, salads, vegetables and Asian dishes. Buy it at: Prytania Liquor Store, The Wine Seller, Hopper's Carte des Vins, Philippe's Wine Cellar, Langenstein's in Metairie, Acquistapace's Covington Supermarket and many Rouses.
