Re: “Mona's Cafe

Mona's has been a staple on my restaurant list for years, since its beginnings on Banks St. in the early 90s. At the time, it was barely big enough for three people to breathe in, but the food was already first rate. Even now, with more locations, the fare is of the highest quality, but it's still affordable. My two favorites are the original location, much larger & beautifully decorated, and the Frenchmen St. place. Two people can still eat there for $20 or less. The chicken tecka and shawarma are my favorites; the portions are humongous, too. I've never known anyone to be disappointed with Mona's.

Re: “Edwin Edwards is Still Quotable ... But No Longer Relevant

"Red used to mean liberal, as in Red China."-- Clancy DuBos.
I have been cringing at the use of "red" to indicate the Republican Party ever since this usage came into vogue after the fall of the Soviet system. I was never a fan of Soviet communism, but I am a fan of good old fashioned American socialism, the kind that gave us the labor movement, the 40 hour week, health insurance and public schools. So I cringe at Mr. DuBos's statement. The equation of "red" with "liberal" is itself specious as liberals are not socialists. They may prevent the creation of a real democratic socialist state by creating institutions that satisfy the need for socialist institutions, but they are not socialists. And China, obviously, is not a liberal state, neither in the present sense as "democratic capitalist, left of center," or in the historical sense as "supportive of the republican form of government." "Republican" that is, as in "an elected, parliamentarian government." For the sake of an informed readership, please watch your choice of words-- and labels.
