MarthaB your ignorance, and I use the term in its purest sense, of the New Orleans citizens support of the Times-Picayune could be the only excuse for your comment. The Some-Times Picayune is the most widely read and subscribed to paper per capita in the country. It defies the national trends. We are not nostalgic, we read our paper every day. It is part of what David Simon has brought respect to, our culture. We are a proud collection of individuals that are not happy to go along with how the rest of the country does things. Our population is very close to back and many of those who are not counted in that number live in the suburbs that the Times Picayune services. Thus, per capita Newhouse is delivering to our homes unlike their other markets. And, those who protested including myself have had the TP in my driveway since childhood. And,every day since I have lived in the distribution area as an adult. The TP is a part of our lives like red beans, Community Coffee, Hubigs Pies, Mardi Gras, The Saints, Hornets, LSU, Jazz Fest etc. We take our hometown exploits seriously and support them passionately. The decline of papers has come from the loss of local businesses through acquisition by national chains. Twenty-five years ago we had 3-5 local department stores who advertised almost every day to get our attention. Now we have only Macy's and Dillard's who see us a far away homogenized market. There ad spends are a fraction of the local businesses. We let our country become Columbus, OH, test marketed to smooth vanilla and run by people far away and disconnected. New Orleans doesn't want your pity MarthaB we want you to come in and soak up what we hold dear. Discover new things about us and yourself. You will then have the knowledge to comment on those things that are the fabric of our great city.
All might be interested in the Podcast, Darwin Distinguished lecture Series from Arizona State University. It is available on iTunes and is a presentation of the evidence discovered since the return of the Beagle from its adventure. All open minded people will enjoy this series of presentations.
On Pharyngula http://scienceblogs.com/pharyngula/ it was commented another science convention of 30K attendees quietly removed NOLA from its rotation of city's where they meet.
More curiously the lead post today is on how Creationism should be taught in classrooms: http://scienceblogs.com/pharyngula/2009/03/how_creationism_should_be_taug.php
Open Minded please google scientific theory and scientific law. i am sure you will absorb this information like the open minded person you represent yourself to be. Thus you will then reform your argument to understand science or challenge the scientific evidence from another vantage point. Be warned things like vision and other ID/Academic Freedom proponents hold up are well understood and are strawmen. They use them because people like me who did not study science formally find the story compelling and plausible. However, since i can read scientists demonstrate with evidence how these statements are false and manipulative. I would hope you would join us in the lectures sponsored by Louisiana Coalition for Science. your commitment to exploration would be a valuable asset to these events.
