"Pennington also cites examples of scientific hoaxes, such as Piltdown Man: 'a great embarrassment to the scientific community!'"
Actually, a great yawn to the scientific community: damn near nobody thought "Piltdown Man" was valid.
"Why do people get so defensive when it comes differing opinion on the subject of the "theory" (sic) of evolution?"
For the same reason people get defensive when cultists try to teach, as fact, geocentrism, white people superiority over black people, and 4+4=193.
"It is a theory, not a fact, not a proof, a theory."
Evolution is not a theory: evolutionary theory is. Evolution is an observed fact, not a theory.
"Wells, a scientist at the Discovery Institute (DI), a national conservative think tank that has attacked evolution as a controversial theory...."
The Discovery Institute Church is is not conservative: it's fascist. Nor is evolution a theory, let alone a controversial theory: evolution is an observed fact, which the Discovery Institute Church knows damn well. Evolutionary theory is a theory, not a fact: evolution is a fact, not a theory.
"The evolution controversy is not between science and religion. It is a controversy between two different interpretations of science."
Translation: "The imaginary controversy is about religion, not science." There is no controversy about evolution happening and having happened (which is an observed fact), nor is there controversy regarding the major mechanisms regarding how evolution happens and happened (i.e., the theory of evolution). Only occult-befuddled cultists claim there is a "controversy" about the subject.
