This hospital was kept open by the black caucaus members from the New Orleans delegation for years for the benefit of one black psychiatrist. It is in deplorable physical condition, costs $1200/day when private psychiatric beds can be bought for less than $600/day; if Medicaid would move into the 21st century. It makes no sense to put up bricks and mortar when beds can be purchased and care case managed in the community. I have experience in the largest mental health center in the state, helped to open one of the largest not for profit outpatient centers in the state, and was able to buy beds at River Oaks for $450/day 10 years ago. This is not rocket science, it just takes people who know what they are doing to set up a continuum that would meet the needs of the chronically mentally ill and their families and not the needs of mental health practitioners who are only interested in setting themselves up for private practices in the future. Get off of your lazy butts and do some work for the truly mentally ill and not the worried well!!!
