I pick up Gambit to keep up with what is really going on in the greater New Orleans area. Gambit has a refreshing way of getting to the bottom of actual stories that concern us rather than play favorites and politics like the folks over at The Times-Picayune.
The political coverage is my favorite but who can ignore the awesome coverage of our unique cuisine here in the region. I have discovered several new restaurants thanks to the good reviews I found in Gambit. Also, Gambit loves the Saints and the Who Dat Nation! Gambit keeps me up-to-date on what's happening in the city so I will know what concerts, plays and events to mark on my calendar to go see. Gambit isn't about New Orleans as much as it IS New Orleans.

Nothing fails quite like prayer and this "pray for Avondale" crusade won't make a bit of difference to the shipyard unless our political leaders can convince the Navy & Pentagon that it makes economic sense to keep ship production going at Avondale. With the feverish push to gut the budget by the Tea Party reactionaries it is going to be a very difficult battle to overturn this decision. It would be nice if there was a supernatural being that oversaw human events and intervened in our world for our benefit but history proves that no such being exists or if one does he (or she) is one sadistic, mean-spirited jerk who enjoys the suffering of humanity.
It is a shame that it took a high school student to knock some sense into BESE to make sure that actual evidence based science is taught in our schools rather than religious myth. I hope this will be the impetus to overturn the embarrassing LSEA & at least bring Louisiana into the 20th Century.
Funny how Jindal conveniently omits discussing Diaper David Vitter & Newt Gingrich in his section on Men Behaving Badly. Bobby must not want to bring attention to how our state's Senator enjoys kinky sex games with prostitutes dressed in a diaper while acting holier than thou in the Senate "promoting" faux family values legislation. Then we have the sterling example of Newt who had the total lack of ethics & class to dump his wife while she was in the hospital being treated for cancer. The aide he left her for later was dumped herself for yet another younger woman. These jerks are shining examples of the real GOP morals and family values which translates as do as we preach at you not as we behave ourselves. Hypocrisy is their guiding principle. Besides Bobby doesn't care about being our Governor as he is too busy setting up his run for the Presidency in 2012.
If Vitter can be re-elected by such a large margin even after being a known user of prostitutes while wearing diapers, what hope does this state and country have in recovering from the damage of the Bush/Cheney mis-Administration years?
It is amazing how this man can show up in public peddling such revisionist history in his fictional book, "Decision Points." Clearly Bush still lives in a fantasy world where facts are not relevant as long as you simply follow your gut over reality. Worst... President... Ever. Should be on trial for war crimes and high treason rather than making the talk-show circuit.
The building is too fragile to move as they have already checked on such an option. The only saving grace would be if the planners for the new medical complex were smart enough to build around the Deutsches Haus thus saving this historic building and unique culture.
Stories like this are depressing but they reflect the impact of poverty and hopelessness on an urban population. Across the country, religious leaders and groups come together to pray to their God that He will help those poor souls who are suffering and who are victims of violence and crime. Pastor John Raphael & the Yes We Care organization have good intentions but history proves that nothing fails as spectacularly as prayer. Millions of Americans pray fervently and yet the killing and violence in our inner cities continues unabated. As a rational Atheist and former Social Worker, I realize that the problems facing our young Black men are systemic and deeply entrenched. We must change the culture these young men operate in that rewards them for being violent towards each other and others in their community. Prayer is an empty and futile gesture as it will take our city and her residents more than appealing to some imagined higher power for help. We all have to look in the mirror to see how we contribute to bigotry, prejudice and selfishness as most of us have closed our eyes and hearts to the plight of those less fortunate. Only when we have that honest and open discussion will we finally make some real change in our city. If there is a God, then He surely isn't paying attention or He is the cause of all suffering and should be held responsible for His abuses. It is better to acknowledge there is no deity going to save us and we must act now to save ourselves and our city. I am not optimistic at our chances as politicians and most citizens prefer the empty rhetoric of religion and prayer over actually making a difference. Time will tell how this will all work out.
