Mr. Simon, thank you for taking the time for writing this great article. I re-posted it on my facebook (believe me, I'm rolling my eyes up on myself), invoking your fame and putting in the (hopefully) attention-getting comment of "Basically while you are reading about Gwyneth Paltrow, your city is going down in flames".
The problem is if 2 of my friends read it, I would be impressed. It's way long and American's do lack an attention-span these days.
But what you write should be read, understood and acted upon by all. But as it is . . . it probably won't. (And the future is scaring the be-jesus out of me.)
You have some pull - could you produce this as an episode for one of your shows, or better yet - 60 Minutes, or Frontline or ANYTHING? Shit's getting worse everyday . . . and I have a feeling you didn't write this just to be ignored.
"anonymous" - the NOPD handle the population of New Orleans DOUBLING during Mardi Gras. . . every year. There is no b.s. like when Vancouver doesn't win a hockey championship (without an extra 350,000 in town) or when Detroit wins one (without an extra 350,000 in town). In fact, every year police and government officials from around the world, dealing with events like the Olympics, festivals, etc. come to observe and learn. Everyone is pretty much impressed by them and the job they do.
Everyone but you. So please go to one of those aforementioned cities and get beat on by cops in riot gear. But don't come to New Orleans and do what the nice officer tells you.
Why the heck did Nagin give Ciber Inc. another $6 million when the system is a flop?
How come he isn't being questioned about this?
Why are people worried about the symbol of a city hall, when the reality it represents is besieged by much more prominent problems: crime, attracting business, etc.?
