I am nominating Vincent Vumbaco and Melissa Vandiver. Both were recent grads from Clemson University who on a pro bono basis donated their time to build a home started in a design class at their school. Because of the complexity of the design creating delays it was ultimately abandoned by both the university and the professor who taught the class. Undaunted by these dilemmas both Vumbaco and Vandiver remained with the project which is about to be concluded. These young people demonstrated unprecedented character and ability while suffering impoverishment during the process.
Due to the expertise gleaned through the project both are now gainfully employed at two local architectural firms. Vandiver is employed at Perez Architects and Vumbaco at Wayne Troyer Architects. Both are still involved on a voluntary basis in providing affordable housing for the poor.
