Re: “The Broken Record

rfrancisr how you go on and on!!

Mr. Rose was precisely correct and your babble, while well written, is precisely wrong, mostly due to the length and complexity of your essay and the brevity and simplicity of Mr. Rose's. How could you possibly debate what he said, especially with all that "community involvement" and "health resources" and "birth control" mumbo jumbo? I say bah to all that. What he said should be screamed from the rooftops, repeated in the media every day, and preached in the churches every Sunday. It should be a widely known and accepted fact that the pathetic lack of parenting and lack of parental love and discipline for these kids is the root, the trunk, and the tree of the problem.

So, you start work on your instruction manual and start up some more outreach programs while the rest of us do what is needed. That is, first admit the truth as Chris Rose did, then find the people inside that roach-infested segment of the community that still care and have morals, and get them to harass and embarrass and scold and teach and preach relentlessly to their brothers, sisters, sons, daughters, nephews, nieces, and neighbors - for money.

Let's pay them for this work! Let’s put them on TV and make them heroes. Let’s give them huge bonuses and rewards for holding crime down in their block or in their family or in their precinct or allotted territory and not give it to the schools, pools, basketball courts, and condom vendors. That will all come in due time as our city heals. This killing needs to become wrong and embarrassing to the perpetrators and the women they bed. I believe it can happen, but it has to start in the kitchen.

Re: “Dear Mr. Mayor

A few nights after Katrina passed, in the late, late night (probably 8/3/05 at 3 a.m.) , I watched an interview with Nagin on a Baton Rouge station. I forget the reporter or the channel. I vividly remember Nagin, shirtless, a large white towel around his neck, beard growing, being freaked out and somewhat incoherent. Some reporter had made his/her way up the steps of the Hyatt and surprised him for this interview. (I actually recall, his head was NOT shiny).
I liked him quite a lot as did you pre-K, but that interview, without any further mention or explanation, or replay, or discussion of, kinda changed my view of him and I assumed he had somewhat of a personal breakdown as he sat in that HOT, dark hotel.
His vacation shortly afterwards further cemented this belief.
Then the "God/Chocolate" speech made it like rock.
Chris, can you or anyone else comment on that interview?
