Disgusting, and a shocking lack of leadership on behalf of Mayor Landrieu.
There are right now privates in Afghanistan away from their families being shot at by the Taliban earning $225 a month in hazardous duty pay. They share this benefit with everyone, up to the 4-star general in charge of the whole shebang. The whole group is also exempt from paying federal income taxes, but unlike the bonuses paid to our city's top leaders, that benefit is capped for officers at what the senior enlisted person in the Army receives. This cap kicks in around the time one becomes a senior Major - six ranks away from the top leader.
So fine, give them all a bit extra for manning their stations while the rest of us hunker down. But thousands for playing phone jockey while the guy manning the pumps (and probably eyeing the water level and his lifeboat at the same time) gets a nice steak dinner? If I were a deputy mayor, I'd make a big contribution to a firefighter's fund and park my new Mercedes in a dark corner of the parking garage.
Well played Rose.
