Lauren, Beyonce smells like puppies in springtime and the consummation of your fondest wish. And cupcake frosting and the tinkling of silver bells.
Hi Owen! I'm commenting here as a longtime friend of the bar, not as a reporter, and all the information I have comes from my friendship with its owners (and marriage to its former talent buyer and manager.) As far as I know, the bar closed for less than a month after Katrina and then once again for nearly a year to renovate. I know that when my husband left the bar in 2007, he specifically warned the owners that the permit had expired. (Their reluctance to renew the permit, putting the bar at risk for heavy fines, was one of his reasons for leaving.) It's encouraging to hear that Circle Bar is in a good position to get legal again, and I hope the publicity about how difficult and confusing it can be to get these mayoralty permits encourages the city to make the process easier to navigate.
Whoa, hey! I am not an investigative journalist, but I have been very close to the Circle Bar over the past decade. I was friends with Kelly and Dave and married the last talent buyer and manager, Lefty Parker. I wouldn't have said that under my real name if I didn't know it was true. Sheesh. Haters.
The city denied a permit to Circle Bar after 13 years because they let it expire after Katrina and nobody bothered to renew it. Also, regarding haters, I always consult Keith Frank.
The "Notorious B.S.I" for short. (or, Bissie.)
"Notorious Bourgeois Self-Interests" is the name of my new band.
