Good point Chris. Why don't people get out from behind their computer screen and off their cell phone and get out into field and do their job? You can't write about something from reading a computer screen or talking on a phone. You have to be there, emersed in it to experience it. It's like being a food critic without tasting the food.

Did you read the 6th word in the quote you are referencing? The word is "not." Why did you spend 3 paragraphs talking about how Chris is making a connection between the crime and having a job? Chris said the exact opposite.
Also, we a society don't choose to leave these babies on their own. Did you read what Chris wrote? The parents choose to leave these babies alone. Some people get "it" and some people don't. It's about personal responsibility.
A response to you last sentence. There are plenty of books (instruction manuals) on parenting. Do you think any of the young parents read them? There has to some personal responsibility. The people we are talking about usually take none. It's always someone else's fault is the attitude most of them have.
