Here is a counter point for you, the reason people put up tents (like me, the guy in the far right of the second picture with the yellow hat on) is because 1. We have kids, or more importantly infants, that cannot be out in the rain or bright sunshine, so they provide shade for the day. 2. So we don't get crowded out by people that have no regard for other people's chairs, ladders, purses of well being. There have been more than a few times that people have knocked over my chairs, yelled at me and threatened violence for merely catching "their" beads. Should beads also be outlawed because some people cannot police themselves, I would argue no. 3. So that I can put stuff like cameras, food, beer and other belongings in a safe place where they won't get stolen. There is nothing about those three things that anyone else should have a problem with.
That being said, I have never taped or roped off an area on the neutral ground, I've never yelled or been belligerent to anyone for walking through "my" space, nor have I left my stuff unattended, ever. We always share the space with those willing to spend time with us and never obscure the walkway for any passers-by. We set up early and stay late and are happy to party with anyone that has the desire to have a good time.
