The heart of this entire issue is consideration for others. There's simply not enough room on the neutral ground for parties of 10 people to have a 30x20 space all to themselves. I don't know where people got the presumptuous idea that simply showing up early entitled them to a private party on the neutral ground.
I suppose I could better tolerate the great Mardi Gras Land Grab if those laying claim were more polite and considerate. There's hundreds of thousands of people out to see the parade. Please do not get upset and physically confrontational when someone needs to walk through 'your' space. It's unrealistic and rude to think your roped and taped wall 'o' ladders buttressed by your tents, chairs, tables and crock pots can secure your privacy.
I understand that it's difficult to come from Kenner or Metairie for a parade without bringing a few comfort and convenience items. But perhaps it's the right thing to do to consider that people that live in the actual neighborhood might want to see the parade as well. There's a reason houses and apartments are more expensive along St Charles Ave. It's cool and great for Mardi Gras! So maybe the next time I squeeze past your empty ladder during Bacchus, you can spare me the threats of violence.
