there was a pow camp in Hahnville (flaggville) located behind the courthouse. By 1947 when my family moved to the area there were prisoners there but they seemed to have freedom to leave when they wanted to. Some of them prisoners married local women. We kids went in and out of the prison through downed barbed wire fences. I don't remember ever seeing a guard. Around 1950, they closed the prison.
One of the prisoners named Hans, a big red haired man, used to tell of stories. I saw Hans When I was in the Air Force in Casablanca, Morocco. After I told him where I knew him from he and his wife drove me back to my base 100 miles away. I saw Hans a few more times while I was stationed in Morocco.
