I live in Atlanta and visit New Orleans about once a year and I’ve seen how chains move into areas which desire hot “big city” retailers. The rumor mill will run for a while. A new well designed shopping center will bring them marching in. Interestingly enough I once heard an announcement in the Atlanta Ikea store “Need a delivery to New Orleans? Check on our delivery rates”, I thought wow they’ll go that far? Trader Joes is always hush hush about their plans, we saw that same secrecy before they moved into the Atlanta market. The BlueBag idea is brilliant, I’d had sort of thought of that business idea before, but someone has beaten me to the punch! New Orleans would be well served by those chains; however the city has great opportunity do their own thing as well. In Brevard, NC, a town of 5,000, there is an independent food store with only one outlet that mimics Whole Foods in concept, but yet has more variety and it does well; it can be done.
