Re: “Smarter than Newhouse

There’s a lot of good stuff in these comments. I do wish I had cited the New Orleans News Ladder as a valuable resource, pointing toward a key function of a new news medium. I hope what I wrote isn’t construed as calling for a mere “patchwork” of existing online resources; the creators of the new non-Newhouse news medium have to design it to work beautifully and compellingly, but there are resources available to take us in that direction. I also don’t mean to be perceived as being part of the debate over whether print is better than electronic : I’m trying to project what constructive response New Orleans can make when somebody takes away its daily ink-on-paper tradition. We can turn this into an opportunity to create a national model, and have something better in place in the likelihood that nola.com doesn’t do what it’s owners say they want it to do. Given the desire, the talent (including people being fired by the Times-Picayune), the available technology, people who could support it financially, we have the ability to try to construct that new medium. I’m in agreement with Brad Ott about the undesirability of having outsiders experiment on us once again – which is why locals have to create a local venture that makes a great replacement for the daily newspaper; and part of the mission is to make sure that information is widely and deeply distributed. (I’m delighted that Mr. $Million Ferrari got to see that great Enrique Alferez show at the Ogden.)
