I must say I quite enjoyed this one.
As a resident of New Orleans since 1995, this article infuriates me because it makes Megan sound very " post-Katrina-I'm-not-from-here-I-just-came-here-to-be-cool-and-follow-my-dreams-I-also-have-a-pen-and-I-can-write-a-bit-with-it-and-ooh-I'm-riding-an-actual-public-bus-so-I'm-Bohemian." The #5 bus has been vital to the corridor for at least the entire 21st century, and frankly the name Marigny-Bywater works because it has and continues to describe to everyone exactly where this bus goes without any hint of hipster angst over names.
This is also a bus route that, post-Katrina, was cut down from full-sized buses to the van-sized fliers due to financial constraints. However, due to rush hour ridership filling the buses at or above their 12 person or so max capacity, they had to bring back the big people movers. It's nice that it's empty at times, but you seem to have a shallow view of "always".
There is a vital community of people in this city that find the buses both functional and adventurous. And there are also people out there that believe and understand that riding public transportation with the myriad of talkative, smelly, oh-so HUMAN riders tends to socialize us better, and not leave us with the unspoken assumption that individual boxed-in transportation environments (read: automobiles) are the basis by which we judge other modes of transit.
You seem like a thoughtful individual, but your attitude towards buses in general tends to paint you as an outsider desperately trying to relate your experiences in a framework that you really do not understand.
