SJ Peters was a powerhouse in baseball and basketball. I will pull out some of my Dad's pictures from the Times-Picayune from the very early 40's. I will post the names of the entire baseball team which won state, and the entire basketball team which also won state. Stay tuned!
Re: “Can you tell me about S.J. Peters High School?”
For thousands of boys growing up in Old Jefferson ,there was Jefferson Playground. Two coaches and supervisors were part of the great S.J.Peters Wildcats baseball team. This was Ed Lavigne (center field and cleanup hitter) and Bert Pittman (pitcher, second base, batted second). These men often said that the 1942 baseball team was so good that nearly every member was offered some type of pro contract. Here is the lineup and you will surely reconized some great names. The coach was Dave Dalhgren, a great hurler from the University of Tennessee .In addition to Pittman and Lavigne were George Bevan "Bo" Strickland, ; Nelson Nocheck; Ray Yochim; Mel Parnell; Pete Modica; Phil Boudreau; Jerry Lagraize; Alonzo Stangna and Raymond Davezac. What a lineup! The basketball team also won state..4 starters were Sammy Long, Jaren Foster, Lenny Muniz, Bert Pittman.
