Tamara Jackson from Silence Is Violence and Mary von Kurnatowski from the Tipitina's Foundation appeared on the WWL Eyewitness Morning News today to talk about the May 23 concert at Tip's for The 19 Fund.

Gambit's nonprofit arm, the Foundation for Entertainment, Development and Education, has teamed up with The Tipitina’s Foundation, the United Way and Silence Is Violence to help the 19 victims of the Mother's Day shooting with a benefit concert Thursday featuring some of New Orleans’ top musicians, including Donald Harrison Jr. leading the Congo Square Nation Mardi Gras Indians, Hot 8 Brass Band, Stooges Brass Band, Bonerama and others.…

The Frenchmen Street blood drive for victims of Mother's Day shooting

Two enormous bloodmobiles — one in neon chartreuse, the other, well, blood-red — stretched down Frenchmen Street from the Apple Barrel to the Spotted Cat this afternoon. The event was called “Frenchmen Street: Roll Up Your Sleeves,” and it was a replacement blood drive for the 19 victims of the Mother’s Day second line shooting in the 7th Ward.…

The New Orleans Police Department is asking for the public’s assistance in locating a stolen statue of a pig in a chef’s outfit. The statue was stolen on the morning of May 1, 2013 during Jazz Fest weekend.

Coal-fired pizzeria Amici headed to Magazine Street

A New Orleans company better known for daiquiris and pizza slices in the French Quarter plans to open a much different concept on Magazine Street.

Renovations are now underway for a pizzeria called Amici, which will serve pizzas prepared in a coal-fired oven. The restaurant is expected to open around mid-June at 3218 Magazine St., which had been the home of Byblos before that Middle Eastern restaurant moved a block up the street last year.…

Lauren LaBorde says Rivertown Theaters' production of the classic is a faithful rendition by Lauren LaBorde Gypsy is based on the memoirs of burlesque star Gypsy Rose Lee, but the show is centered on Rose — her fiercely stubborn stage mother who's been portrayed by powerhouses including Bette Midler, Bernadette Peters and Patti LuPone in film and stage versions. Unfortunately Lisa Picone, the Rose in Theater 13's production of the musical at Rivertown Theaters for the Performing Arts, was battling a sinus infection during opening weekend's Sunday matinee (as evidenced by coughs between lines and coming from backstage), and it hindered her performance.…
