Those interested in helping create another truly local food distribution business should check out the New Orleans Food Co-op, www.nolafoodcoop.org. We are working to create a member-owned community grocery store that emphasizes truly local and regional foods.

I wish the piece had spent more time dealing with the hokum of Whole Foods, which paints itself as a friend of the little (green) man but is actually little more than Wal-Mart with a granola breakfast. The local stores have virtually no control over purchases of truly local products.

This whole concept of "localwashing" brings up something I experienced on a much smaller (and local) level recently at the Mid City Farmers' Market on Orleans Avenue: I discovered a tomato with a "Vine Grown in Arkansas" label sold by a farmer who told me all his vegetables were grown on his farm in Folsom, LA.

I wrote the whole thing up here:
Good article! But the caption has a grammar error in it.

If it's really local, then WalMart and others can answer the question I always ask, "Where did this come from and why isn't that noted on the label/sticker/sign?"
