<![CDATA[I've always heard that it was a safe non-Jewish alternative cuisine due to the lack of dairy products. (Chinese food is, however, very pork-intensive, so that never made total sense to me -- how could you trust in complete kosher in a restaurant with lots of pork dishes?)

<![CDATA[When I lived in NYC for a few years after college, it was assumed that, if you were Jewish, you'd be getting Chinese food and going to a movie on Christmas day. Apparently, this custom goes back at least three generations there.

<![CDATA[Oh, yeah, this is a pretty well known tradition where I grew up in Cleveland, Ohio (the home of 'A Christmas Story') which also happens to has a very large Jewish population (including a couple of true kosher certified Chinese restaurants). Ditto for my Jewish friends (and their families) here in Portland, Oregon.
